Four people died in an accident at work today around 1:00 PM on a farm in Arena Po, in the province of Pavia. Two bodies were quickly recovered; the other two required emptying the sewage settling tank where all four had ended up. The Carabinieri are investigating the incident. "The deaths of four workers on a farm in the Pavia area are a shocking tragedy that leaves us all shocked and speechless. It's truly a defeat for everyone," wrote Annamaria Furlan, general secretary of the CISL union, on Twitter, commenting on the news of the deaths of four workers who drowned in Arena Po (Pavia). "Workplace safety is a priority, a true national emergency that the new government must address together with the social partners urgently and with extraordinary measures," added the CISL leader. "Yet another horrifying workplace fatality involving four workers in Lombardy. Now more than ever, strong action is needed from the government, and prompt intervention is essential to put an end to these silent massacres. We can no longer stand by and watch." This is what Paolo Capone, general secretary of the UGL, stated in a statement regarding the workplace accident that occurred today at a farm in Arena Po (Pavia). "The numbers speak for themselves: in the first half of 2019, there were 482 deaths, the worst figure since 2016," he added. "We need more controls, more training, and the dissemination of a culture of safety in the workplace, especially in the most at-risk areas. The UGL is on tour with the 'Work to Live' event aimed at raising public awareness of this sad phenomenon."
