A sunset rendezvous with Vesuvius to hear its unmissable duet live with a band of musicians: this is the unusual program for the scientific-musical event taking place tomorrow on the Neapolitan volcano. "Concerto Vesuviano Jazz and Rocks" will be a true "jam session with Vesuvius," during which saxophonist Marco Guidolotti's quartet will interact with the sounds produced by the volcano thanks to the transformation into musical notes of electromagnetic data acquired by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) on Saturday afternoon during a geo-excursion to the Gran Cono del Vesuvio. Using equipment provided by the INGV, electromagnetic (EM) pulses will be sent to the volcano, and its response, determined by the nature of the rocks that form the edifice hundreds of meters deep, will be transformed into music through a mathematical process, developed by the EMusic – the Sound of the Earth team, which generates musical notes from geophysical data. The event, open to the public and organized by EMusic, INGV, the Order of Geologists of Campania, and Aarhus Geofisica, will be divided into two parts: from 1:30 pm to 5 pm, the geo-excursion and sonification of "Electromagnetic Music" will take place; followed by the concert. No one can know what notes will be produced and what music will result: a true discovery that spectators and musicians will make together that day, live, at the concert on Vesuvius.
