“The discovery of archaeological finds is a fact that has been carefully followed by the Ministry through the work of the Superintendency, which in recent months has promoted a series of meetings with both the EAV company and the Municipality of Castellammare in order to reach alternative solutions that, in compliance with ancient emergencies, allow the project objectives to be achieved”. This was stated by the Undersecretary of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Cultural Activities and Tourism, Anna Laura Orrico, responding in the Chamber to a question presented by deputies Vitiello and Schullian regarding initiatives aimed at the protection and enhancement of the archaeological finds recently discovered in Castellammare di Stabia, in Piazza Unità d'Italia, during the works started by EAV (Ente autonomo Volturno) for the construction of an underground car park in the area in front of the Castellammare stop of the Circumvesuviana. In recalling the discoveries made, Orrico explained that "the Superintendency, given the impossibility of building an underground car park due to the pre-existence of the ancient structures, has sent the EAV company and the Municipality of Castellammare a notice of refusal of authorization (dated September 6, 2019) and is waiting to receive a project variant, through which the possibility of leaving what was brought to light will be assessed. In the meantime - concluded Orrico - instructions have been given aimed at re-burying the archaeological emergencies, precisely to guarantee their protection while waiting to be able to ensure their enhancement and to allow the restoration of traffic in the square".
