Two police officers were killed in a shootout outside the Trieste Police Headquarters. The shooter was with another man, his brother, who was injured and taken to the hospital. The two men attempted to flee but were stopped by law enforcement. The two were shot at point-blank range and were immediately deemed critical. They were taken to the hospital, where they died shortly thereafter. The two police officers killed in the shootout at the Trieste Police Headquarters are Selectman Pierluigi Rotta from Naples and Officer Matteo De Menego. According to reports, three other officers and one of the two attacking brothers were injured in the shootout. None of the four are believed to be in life-threatening danger. The two brothers who committed the shooting were escorted to the police headquarters by patrol officers after "a search for the person responsible for the early morning scooter robbery." "For reasons currently being investigated," a statement from the Trieste Police Headquarters reads, "one of the two diverted the officers' attention and fired several shots at them at point-blank range. Both attempted to flee the police station but were apprehended." For reasons not yet identified, one or both of them allegedly snatched guns from one or two officers, shooting and wounding two officers. Other officers present returned fire and injured the brother, who has reportedly already been taken to the hospital by ambulance. The whereabouts of the perpetrator of the robbery are unclear. Witnesses say he is inside the police headquarters. The two men taken to the station are believed to be brothers. Other officers reportedly returned fire, wounding one of the men. The owner of a local restaurant reported hearing gunshots from inside the station and moments later seeing a young man running out of the building with a gun in his hand. He attempted to open a police car parked in front, but was unsuccessful. Officers arrived shortly thereafter and subdued him.
The Court of Assizes of Trieste has acquitted Alejandro Augusto Stephan Meran, who was deemed not indictable, deciding to commit him to a Rems for a minimum period of 30 years.
