France is once again plunged into the nightmare of terrorism, although for now, caution is being exercised and authorities appear to be ruling out a jihadist motive. An attack by a knife-wielding man against French police officers at the prefecture on the Île-de-la-Cité, in the heart of Paris, has left five dead. The attacker, it emerged, is a convert to Islam, and his wife, according to neighbors, is also Muslim. The incident comes just after a police strike following a worrying escalation in attacks on officers. Witnesses described scenes of genuine panic, with people fleeing in tears; access to the affected area was completely blocked by law enforcement. According to Le Figaro, the attacker, also likely an administrative officer from the prefecture, was killed by police fire; several officers were injured. At least five people are believed to have died, including a woman and the attacker. The attacker had converted to Islam a year and a half ago, and his arrested wife is also believed to be Muslim. Investigators initially seemed to rule out a terrorist motive and were "focusing on an internal conflict," according to sources cited by BFM-TV. Sources cited by Le Figaro said it could be a "romantic affair." Others suggest a workplace dispute. Jean-Marc Bailleul, the secretary general of the French internal security union, quoted by BFM-TV, said the stabber may have been seized by "a fit of madness." Interior Minister Christophe Castaner, however, stated that he had never shown "the slightest sign" of mental instability. Castaner has decided to postpone a planned mission to Turkey and Greece because of the incident.
