Born as a purely musical festival, Balconica, this year, in addition to the peculiar concerts from the balconies, overlooking the alleys of the town, adds a myriad of other activities, ranging from workshops for children to art exhibitions, from ethno-anthropological experiences to botany lessons, for a total of 19 shows, 3 exhibitions, 2 installations, 1 laboratory and 1 workshop.
"After the almost unexpected response of the last edition, we are trying to improve ourselves by offering a vast and heterogeneous choice of experiences. The vast majority of the authors who will attend this 2019 edition of Balconica will be treading the "stages" of the festival for the first time. This renewal, a consequence of the choice of not wanting to stagnate the event and the stimuli within a dangerous comfort zone, has allowed us to come into contact with numerous new faces, willing and eager to collaborate in the success of the festival and the various shows and activities", says Daniele Ruocco, president of the association. Among the highlights of this new edition of Balconica, the exhibition of the Spanish painter Josè Ortega, a student of Picasso, ten lithographs that invite the continuous pursuit of one's freedom of thought and action, the exaltation of democracy and the denial of dictatorship, created in collaboration with the Municipality of San Giovanni a Piro thanks to the commitment of the deputy mayor Pasquale Sorrentino and Nicola Cobucci, trustee of the Ortega family: "Since the first edition, we have chosen to make culture accessible to all, not only through the shows but also with the collateral activities that will be present during the festival. Thanks to the availability of the deputy mayor of San Giovanni a Piro, Pasquale Sorrentino, during the festival it will be possible to visit the exhibition "The Decalogue of Democracy" by the Spanish painter Josè Ortega. Ortega, an exile by choice, a convinced anti-fascist, a fighter in the name of freedom, could not help but have a special place in this edition of Balconica", says Mariagrazia Merola, creator of the event. Among the other new features of this new edition, a tea tasting using the Chinese Gong fu cha ceremony, preceded by a lesson on botany and properties of the plant, classification, processing and preparation methods and the origins of the aforementioned ceremony, by Daniele Croce (Tea Sommelier & Tea trader ADeMaThè – First Level Authorized Teacher). And, for the little ones, from 17:00 pm the puppet workshop by Nigel Lembo: “During the workshop, children will have the opportunity to develop manual skills, imagination, small theatrical notions and a lot of affinity with entities such as puppets, which are a timeless game”.
Last but not least, this year Balconica will be entirely plastic free:
"Since for us culture is also respect for the environment, after 6 years we have managed, in collaboration with the municipal administration of Futani and the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, to make the festival plastic free. All the tableware used in the association's stands (and, hopefully, also in commercial activities) will be made of 100% compostable material: in this way we will try to give importance to common goods, countering the enormous waste of plastic".
