The two Olympic gold medalists Daniele Garozzo and Valerio Aspromonte and the world gold medalist Alice Volpi will be some of the special guests of the forty-first edition of the Calvanico Chestnut Festival. A dense, rich program, including show cooking with chestnuts and the Mediterranean Diet as protagonists in a multisensory journey that from the Picentini Mountains reaches the Amalfi Coast in the encounter with the Corbarino Food Experience. And also the exhibition of young emerging chefs, trekking in synergy with Legambiente Valle dell'Irno, through the paths traveled over the centuries by pilgrims, the rediscovery of the naturalistic heritage and educational workshops designed for children to rediscover the scents that the earth offers.
Above all, lots of food and wine, discovering the genuine flavours of ancient recipes jealously guarded and handed down from grandmother to granddaughter, from generation to generation, such as the “calzoncello di castagne”, which has become a “cult” for the goodness and excellence of the raw materials, or the “mallone sciatizzo” prepared with 63 spontaneous wild herbs.
A complex program, presented this morning during the press conference hosted in the spaces of the historic building of the Municipality of Calvanico. Two weekends, from Friday to Sunday on 4/5/6 and 11/12/13 October 2019, Piazzale Europa and Località Chiaio, Calvanico (Salerno).
Well-being and a healthy lifestyle, uncontaminated nature, noble villages celebrating, races in the lush chestnut groves, authentic flavors and traditional peasant dishes, between history and legends, in a recovery of the 100% green rural vision: all this is the Chestnut Festival of Calvanico, promoted by the Parish of SS Salvatore with the direction of Don Vincenzo Pierri, the organization of the Festival Committee and the synergy with the Municipality of Calvanico, presided over by the mayor Francesco Gismondi.
Above all, an important purpose, namely the recovery of the historical-architectural heritage, because this year too the proceeds of the event will be donated to the renovation of the ecclesiastical complex of SS. Salvatore, whose original structure dates back to the thirteenth century. The goal is to be able to save the facade of the church, after the very first interventions on the rectory.
“The Chestnut Festival is a great moment of aggregation of all age groups, from the young to the elderly – underlines the mayor Francesco Gismondi – It has an enormous value because it reflects an important tradition. Festival means first of all chestnut production. Calvanico produces high quality chestnuts, comparable to few others both in Italy and in the Campania Region. We distinguish ourselves from other productions. The Festival, which today is in its 41st edition, was born in the 70s and was the first festival held in the province of Salerno on this product. Then they copied us a bit, but it remains an important event aimed at the Irno Valley and the entire Campania Region. It has improved more and more. For a few years, on the intuition of our parish priest Vincenzo Pierri, it has been relaunched, from all points of view, eco-sustainable and food and wine, cultural and in the dusting off of all traditions”.
And the mayor adds: “We invite everyone to come to Calvanico, because it is a splendid town, which takes care of life, of the food style, in the search for a superior quality and well-being. We have wonderful air and climate, exceptional water, in addition to our production of chestnuts, hazelnuts and olives. We will also taste the hazelnut sweets and we hope to delve further. Everyone is invited to rediscover these ancient traditions, to see how we have transformed our town over the years, making it liveable. The Chestnut Festival was intended for an important purpose to adapt our small cathedral. It is an important event for all citizens, with the involvement of all generations. It is a puzzle, everything falls into the right place. An event appreciated by everyone over the years. I hope it can be appreciated more and more”.
A strong synergy between the parish and the municipality for the enhancement of the territory. “The main objective is to bring people together and create a community. Because only when you socialize and feel good together, you are able to welcome others – explains Don Vincenzo Pierri, priest of Calvanico and rector of the Santuario San Michele – An event eagerly awaited in the Irno Valley that aims to raise funds for the renovation of the ancient parish complex of Calvanico, which, like many areas of our district, still bears the scars of the 80 earthquake. Like last year, the formula of two consecutive weekends is renewed. It is a mainly food and wine event, but over time, it is becoming a mega container in which many activities converge, suitable for the whole family, from the youngest to the oldest, from sports to moments of reflection on the environment, from food and wine to the discovery of emerging local chefs. We look forward to seeing you all”.
Furthermore, the collaboration with Legambiente Valle dell'Irno is renewed with “Gli Antichi Sentieri – Il Trekking”: two itineraries designed for the whole family and accessible to all, to discover the natural environment: A real sensory experience to recover the freedom to walk, to get away from the metropolitan chaos, to concentrate on your breathing and to enjoy the beauty of the path, between nature, faith and culture. The first, Sunday 6 October departure at 9 am, will move from Frassineto to the Madonna della Vallone, with a stop at the monumental tree, a world heritage site, while the second Sunday 13 October along the water route with a visit to the Valle dei Mulini, up to the church of San Michele di mezzo.
PROGRAM – Ribbon cutting on Friday, October 4th at 18.30:5 pm, with institutional greetings. On Friday, October 17.30th at XNUMX:XNUMX pm the Fencing Lab, the workshop by fencing champions dedicated to adults and children, with the participation of the maestro of the Club Scherma Salerno Marco Autuori, in addition to institutional representatives.
Showcooking, Sunday 13 October at 11 am, between Mediterranean Diet and Corbarino Food Experience. Also accompanying are the young emerging chefs of the area who will propose the ancient dishes of grandmothers, in a more contemporary key.
In-depth workshop on the theme “Calvanico Sustainable City” with the presence of industry experts and local producers. And lots of itinerant folk music in the background.
The forty-first edition of the Calvanico Chestnut Festival enjoys the moral patronage of the Campania Region, of all the Municipalities of the Irno Valley, and of the Tourist Boards of the Campania provinces (Ept Salerno, Naples, Caserta, Avellino and Benevento) to testify to the cultural importance of the event for the valorization of the typical products of the territory and for the stimulus to innovative forms of sustainable tourism.
