Following a motion of no confidence presented by 14 city councilors and the en masse resignation of his councilors, the mayor of Marcianise, Antonello Velardi, is throwing in the towel. Velardi himself announced the decision on his Facebook page. "I have just tendered my resignation as mayor of Marcianise," wrote Velardi, who is also editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper "Il Mattino." "I have sent the communication," he continued, "to the secretary general and, for information, to the president of the city council. My resignation follows the irrevocable resignations, filed this morning, submitted by all the councilors of my council. I will remain in office for a fixed term to complete routine administrative procedures." Here, then, is the explanation for the decision to prematurely end the administrative adventure, which began in 2016. "I decided to resign following the motion of no confidence presented by all the opposition councilors and five majority councilors, elected with my coalition. The document challenges my administrative activities to date. This motion will be discussed at the next city council meeting, convened for Monday, October 14th." "I apologize to everyone for the many things I have failed to accomplish," Velardi states, "but I can assure you that I have always tried. I believe I have accomplished a lot in these three years, despite all the limitations I recognize: but I am not a robot, I am simply a person. Therefore, I ask at least for justification, not absolution. Marcianise has justified all those who, over the years, have led it into the abyss where I found it: I now ask for justification for not having been a robot and not having suddenly and completely solved all the city's problems with a magic wand." Velardi, under police protection for a year and a half due to threats, had already resigned in March 2018, but the crisis had subsided; today, however, the rift seems irreparable. "I can finally take a breather and seek some rest: life had become hell for me. Warmest regards to everyone," he concluded after thanking the councilors and councilors.
