Maestro Alberto Testa, an icon of international dance, has died at his home in Turin. He would have turned 97 on December 23. Primarily active as a choreographer, he designed ballets for numerous opera productions as well as for prose theater. Founder of the Positano Prize for the Art of Dance, one of the most important in Italy, he was the author of numerous publications. The "prof," as he was known, began to suffer last June, following the death of his friend Franco Zeffirelli. Since its founding in 2011, Alberto Testa had been honorary president of the Giornale della Danza, which commemorated the "great maestro" with a lengthy article. After graduating in Literature, he studied classical dance in Turin with Grazioso Cecchetti, son of Enrico Cecchetti, furthering his studies with Susanna Egri. He subsequently performed in some of the leading Italian and international theaters under the guidance of great masters such as Leonide Massine, Margarete Wallmann, and Aurel Milloss, participating in numerous festivals such as the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Sagra Musicale Umbra, and the Salzburg Festival. Primarily active as a choreographer between 1965 and 1987, he created the dances for Luchino Visconti's The Leopard and numerous films by Franco Zeffirelli. He taught Dance History for thirty years at the National Academy of Dance in Rome. President of the Porselli Prize "A Life for Dance," he was co-founder and director of the Documentation and Research Center for Dance in Turin. An organizer of major exhibitions, he has overseen the organization of dance concerts and several editions of the renowned Dance Marathon at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto. A brilliant lecturer, he has been a ballet historian and critic for the daily newspaper La Repubblica since its founding, and has contributed articles on dance and ballet to leading Italian and foreign encyclopedias and dictionaries. Jury president and artistic director of international dance competitions, such as the Spoleto International Dance Week, he has received, among other awards, the Gino Tani Prize for dance criticism in 1991, the President of the Republic's Silver Plaque in 2002, and the Guido Lauri Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2011.
