Giorgio Squinzi, former president of Confindustria (the Italian Industrialists' Association), owner of Sassuolo football club, and, above all, sole director of Mapei, a chemical company founded by his father in the 30s that became a world leader in the production of adhesives, sealants, and chemical products for the construction industry, died late this afternoon at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. He had been ill for some time and had been hospitalized for two weeks at the facility just outside Milan, where he was cared for by his wife Adriana and his two children Marco and Veronica, both longtime employees of Mapei. Born 76 years ago in Cisano Bergamasco, Squinzi graduated in Chemistry from the Polytechnic University of Milan and became president of Confindustria in 2012. He held this position until 2016, maintaining his trademark style. "I was born an entrepreneur, into a family of entrepreneurs," he said in his last message as head of the industrialists, "and over these years I have tried to act as an entrepreneur for the good of our entire association system." Squinzi, however, had other passions as well. Starting with sports: for ten years, he supported the Mapei-Quick Step cycling team, until 2002, when he stopped sponsoring it amid the doping scandal in the cycling world. That year, he, a Milan fan, bought Sassuolo Calcio, which he led from Serie C2 to Serie A. It's no coincidence that the Emilian municipality has declared a day of mourning. "Milan and Italy have lost an important figure," Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala paid tribute to him. "At La Scala, we will miss him," he added, referring to the Assolombarda assembly that will be held tomorrow at the Milanese theater. A "capable and courageous entrepreneur," he described him. Squinzi had been ill for some time, but he never let his illness stop him. A music enthusiast, he joined the board of directors of La Scala in 2016, where he showed up punctually to meetings, despite having difficulty walking. At least until the one two days ago, when he was unable to attend.
