They are requesting that the next Committee for Public Order and Security be held in the Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanita', in the Sanita' district of Naples. The request, contained in a letter sent to Luciana Lamorgese, Minister of the Interior; Carmela Pagano, Prefect of Naples; and Alessandro Giuliano, Police Chief of Naples; Canio Giuseppe La Gala, Provincial Commander of the Carabinieri; and Gabriele Failla, Provincial Commander of the Naples Financial Police. The letter was signed by associations that have been active in the area for years: the San Gennaro Community Foundation, the Sannaro Cooperation, the Sanita' District Shopkeepers' Network, the parishes of the Sanita' District, the Vomero Christian Church, the Methodist Church of Naples, and Save the Children Naples. "A special request," they write, "but there is a strong need to continue collaborating with the institutions so as not to undermine the great joint efforts made in recent years." Residents of the neighborhood explain that there is a "strong need to feel the presence of the institutions in the area, without having to wait for another victim" and that "the State guarantees the protection the neighborhood deserves: the community feels, now more than ever, the need for closeness from the authorities." There is a climate of "growing tension and insecurity that has long characterized our neighborhood," and, they report, "the community often finds itself alone in dealing with incidents of petty crime, neglect, and violence." "The frequent 'stese' (raids), the large groups of teenagers, often armed and alone, alarm and worry us," they write. "The latest incident was on Monday, September 30, when a boy from our community was attacked by a group of armed teenagers and stabbed in the back. A few hours after the attack, another attack occurred in the Stella neighborhood." Residents of the neighborhood recall the work done over the years to restore Sanita', "a long-tormented land, to the light it deserves." A commitment that has seen the neighborhood unite, becoming a "community," choosing the path "of cooperation and associations, to create jobs, guarantee young people a different opportunity, and offer the youngest the choice of a different future." "The neighborhood has committed itself, reinventing itself, in an attempt to leave behind years of abandonment, degradation, poverty, and crime," they emphasize. "This growth—cultural, social, and tourism—cannot be entrusted solely to citizen initiative." "Alone, we are unable to address the endemic and structural difficulties that still make it impossible to feel safe in a place we lovingly call home," they emphasize. "We cannot continue to believe in progress and growth alone if we are afraid to walk alone in the evening, to get a coffee, or to walk our children to school."
