The autopsy performed yesterday on the body of the unfortunate newborn found lifeless and stuffed in a suitcase in an apartment in Angellara, a hamlet in the municipality of Vallo della Lucania, in the province of Salerno, confirmed investigators' theories. The baby was killed by his mother, 30-year-old Moldovan Olga Iacob. This, as Il mattino reports, occurred during a home birth. The mother gave birth alone and, in attempting to deliver the baby, caused fatal injuries to his skull. To extract him, she likely performed incorrect maneuvers. She likely grabbed the baby by the head, crushing his skull and inflicting other bone injuries that killed him instantly. A shocking story considering that Olga is the mother of two other children who live in Moldova with her estranged husband. She then cut the umbilical cord with a razor blade, wrapped the baby's body in a towel, placed it in a plastic bag, and then put it in the suitcase where it was found by the Carabinieri. But the heavy bleeding forced her to go to the hospital for treatment. There, of course, the doctors noticed she had just given birth and alerted the Carabinieri, who went to her home and made the gruesome discovery. The autopsy was performed yesterday afternoon by coroner Antonio Maiese, on the orders of the deputy prosecutor of the Vallo della Lucania Public Prosecutor's Office, Paolo Itri, who was leading the investigation. She had been the one to call 118 last night due to heavy bleeding. Admitted to the "San Luca" hospital in Vallo della Lucania, she received the necessary treatment, and the hospital staff simultaneously alerted the police. The subsequent inspection of the home of the woman, who has lived in Vallo for some time and works as a caregiver for a local family, led to the dramatic discovery. Among the residents of Angellara, there is little desire to talk. Everyone is shocked by such a horrific event, in a quiet area unaccustomed to being in the news. It appears that no one, not even the 30-year-old's employers, knew about her ongoing pregnancy: the woman, thanks in part to her robust build, apparently managed to keep her condition a secret. She even tried to deny having given birth to the hospital doctors who examined her. A DNA sample was also taken from her body to dispel any doubts about her pregnancy. The woman remains in custody at San Luca Hospital, as ordered by Deputy Prosecutor Paolo Itri immediately after the autopsy.
