The axe of US tariffs is falling on Made in Italy products, hitting Pecorino Romano, Parmigiano Reggiano, Provolone, and Prosciutto with a 25% tariff. Olive oil and Prosecco, however, are expected to be spared. This is according to the list of products published by US authorities after the WTO approved the United States' entry. The tariffs are expected to take effect on October 18th. The list also includes Scotch whiskey, French wines, Swiss Emmental, and Gruyère. A 10% tariff is expected on commercial aircraft. "The tariffs will take effect on October 18th," confirmed US Trade Chief Robert Lightizer, adding that the Trump administration hopes to negotiate with the European Union to resolve the issues at hand. The US has also requested a WTO meeting on October 14th to obtain approval for countermeasures against the EU. Italian wine, pasta, and olive oil have been spared US tariffs on imports of industrial and agricultural goods from the European Union. The World Trade Organization (WTO) has recognized Washington's right to impose tariffs on $7,5 billion of European exports as compensation for aid granted to the Airbus aircraft consortium.
