“We ask the Government to know the reasons for the underuse of the Afragola railway station and what it intends to do to rebalance departures and arrivals from the capital” is the request of the spokespersons of the 5 Star Movement Andrea Caso of the Finance Commission and Salvatore Micillo, former Undersecretary of the Environment, who presented a question, in agreement with the regional councilor Tommaso Malerba.
It was supposed to be the railway hub of the South by 2022 and, in the meantime, serve the provinces of Naples, Caserta and Benevento to avoid that the inhabitants had to reach Naples to access the high-speed trains. This was not the case, because the number of trains available, remains insufficient to date, forcing commuters and travelers, from the northern area of Naples to go to the Naples Central station.
Furthermore, there is a lack of regional and metropolitan connections from Afragola to Naples and vice versa, as well as an adequate connection with the cities of Caserta and Benevento.

On the Afragola-Rome route – as stated in the parliamentary question – there are 10 Frecciarossa and 9 ItaloTreno compared to the 42 Frecciarossa and 21 ItaloTreno that depart from Naples Central, while on the Rome Termini-Afragola route there are 20 Frecciarossa and 9 ItaloTreno compared to the 50 Frecciarossa and 21 ItaloTreno that stop at Naples Central.

“The increase in trains can easily happen – explains Malerba of the Transport Commission – considering that travellers, coming from other provinces, can easily reach the Afragolese station, via the motorway network, also decongesting the Neapolitan traffic”.
