Children celebrated, with a postmark, and a band concert. This morning's celebrations in Torre del Greco (Naples) were held in a spirit of solidarity. The city administration, led by Mayor Giovanni Palomba, organized the sixtieth anniversary of the death of Enrico De Nicola, the first President of the Italian Republic. He lived in a villa in the Vesuvian city, now home to the bar association that bears his name. The event, which involved students from several schools in the city (including the comprehensive school named after him), culminated with a press conference in the council chamber of Palazzo Baronale. The event preceded the postmarking of the event, commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Development and Poste Italiane, which also issued a special stamp. Mayor Giovanni Palomba, along with Poste Italiane representative Enrico Menegazzo, and Councilor Loredana Raia, representing the Campania Regional Council, performed the postmarking. Raia himself had previously emphasized "the importance of Enrico De Nicola in the history of our nation" and how significant "the place of meditation chosen for him in the villa was. The villa itself features a pine forest that the president, in his will, left to the children of Torre del Greco so that they could build a playground. Today, the administration has finally cleared it of the garbage bins that had been stored there: now we must commit, together with the Metropolitan City, to following through on the president's expressed wishes." For Mayor Palomba, "De Nicola is a role model, whose memory must be passed on to the younger generations." The events, which will continue this afternoon with the conference "Enrico De Nicola, Sixty Years After His Death. The Figure. The Values," scheduled for the Santissima Trinita' church, are being organized by Torre del Greco's Councilor for Culture, Enrico Pensati: "We have followed the mayor's expressed desire, who, upon taking office, emphasized the need to properly celebrate the 60th anniversary of De Nicola's passing." Also speaking at the conference held in the council chamber were Luisa Liguoro, president of the Torre Annunziata Bar Association, Alfonso Vitiello, head of the city's Lions, and journalist Ermanno Corsi.
