From tomorrow until November 2nd, Rai Cultura will present five of the most iconic Neapolitan theater productions every Saturday at 9:15 pm on Rai5: from "Saturday, Sunday, and Monday" by Eduardo De Filippo, directed for television by Paolo Sorrentino and for the stage by Toni Servillo; to "Ferdinando," by Annibale Ruccello, starring a magnificent Isa Danieli and directed by Giuseppe Bertolucci; from the reading "Servillo Reads Naples," in which the actor tackles texts by major Neapolitan playwrights (from Viviani to Borrelli); to two works by Roberto Saviano: "Sanghenapule," starring the extraordinary Mimmo Borrelli; and the stage version of "Gomorrah"—a TV premiere—produced at the Teatro Mercadante in 2008, just months after the novel's publication and resounding success. It begins tomorrow with Eduardo De Filippo's comedy "Saturday, Sunday, and Monday." Written in 1959, it is revived in a version curated by Toni Servillo, who serves as director and performer, alongside a superb Anna Bonaiuto. Set in a Naples no longer starving after the First World War, but in a bourgeois Naples on the eve of an economic boom, it features three days of domestic tragicomedy centered on a large family in which three different generations live side by side. A banal ragù is at the center of the drama: yet on this flimsy pretext, Eduardo has constructed a tragedy of misunderstanding and the fear of loneliness, of hidden truths and the emotional upheavals that profoundly shake one's existence. The play was recorded in 2004 at the Teatro Mercadante in Naples, with Paolo Sorrentino directing for television.

On Rai5, the story of Mario Merola: "The King of Naples, History and Legend"

by Vincenzo Scarpa July 16, 2025 - 12:45 12:45

Mario Merola returns to dominate the scene, this time through the intense and profound story of someone who truly knew him. Thursday, July 17, in prime time on Rai5, the show will air: The King of Naples: History and Legend by Mario Merola, the documentary directed by Massimo Ferrari and written with Luciano Stella, which traces the rise of a man who became the voice and face of popular Naples, its music, and its people. Produced by Big Sur with Rai Documentari and Mad Entertainment, the documentary is loosely based on the autobiography. Naples one way… My long journey, written by Merola himself with Geo Nocchetti.

Using archival images and previously unseen footage, Ferrari constructs a candid and passionate portrait, spanning the city's iconic locations—from the port to the Case Nuove, from Piazza Mercato to the kitchen of the house in Portici—where family memories and traditions are still handed down today. The heart of the film beats in the stories of those who lived it: his children Francesco, Roberto, and Loredana Merola, as well as artists such as Gigi D'Alessio, Nino D'Angelo, Marisa Laurito, and the writer Maurizio De Giovanni. All are called upon to piece together the mosaic of a character who turned the sceneggiata into a cultural phenomenon, bringing it to levels of popularity unimaginable in the 70s and 80s.

The Cultural Foster Care project continues to amaze, with new initiatives that promise to redefine the role of museums in society. Active since 2020, this innovative model is expanding further, aiming to engage families and minors in cultural experiences that go far beyond traditional stereotypes.
