Virginia Villani, spokesperson for the Five Star Movement in the Chamber of Deputies, announced: "After the "Salvamare Law" is approved by the Environment Committee, the bill will be brought to the floor on Monday." "The 'save the rivers' amendment was also approved," Villani continued, "a crucial step forward: it could help protect and clean up the Sarno River and its canals. The Save the Sea bill represents a major achievement by the Five Star Movement, in concert with the other three political forces in the majority. The problem of the massive presence of waste in the marine environment has recently taken on the dimensions of a complex and global battle, which this bill helps address. Plastics are the main components of marine litter, accounting for at least 5% of the total, in addition to other types of waste. Italy is the third Mediterranean country with the highest plastic discharge into the sea, reaching a record 5 tons per day: the presence of waste in the sea is a global challenge that must be addressed with targeted policies. Now, fishermen will finally be able to bring waste accidentally caught in their nets ashore and leave it in recycling centers: until now, this action was prohibited by law! A true paradox that we have decided to eliminate with the Save the Sea law. Together European Directive 85/90/EU, which aims to adopt measures to achieve an ambitious and lasting reduction in the consumption of single-use plastic products and, in particular, a ban on the marketing of certain plastic products, represents a fundamental solution to the problem of pollution of our seas. "This is a historic measure," Villani emphasized, "which will help protect our environment comprehensively, thanks also to the proposed "save rivers" amendment, which extends protection to waterways and lakes. Indeed, with this addition to the Save the Sea law, even waste accidentally fished out of lakes, rivers, and lagoons, or even that voluntarily collected during cleanup campaigns, will be classified as municipal waste. This is also a turning point for the local communities, and in particular, my hometown, the provinces of Naples and Salerno: an incentive for the reclamation and protection of the Sarno River." "Meanwhile," Villani concluded, "the Five Star Movement's commitment to the environment will continue unabated in the coming months with the implementation of this law, as well as by disseminating and raising awareness about plastic-free practices."
