The direction was also taken care of this year by the very talented Neapolitan actor Antonino Laudicina,
who with his mastery, managed to make the performance even more exciting. The Merone Company boasts the aegis of the Taranto Foundation and the text that will be performed in December is one of the great Nino's strong points.
Written in 1932 in Italian to get around the obstacle of the fight against dialect waged by fascism, the comedy “L'imbroglione onesto” by Viviani, nevertheless represents an ineffably Neapolitan world, which sees the participation of lively and enterprising characters, capable of inventing any activity to save themselves from poverty. It tells the story of Raffaele Conti, an “honest cheater”, a widower and father of Pietruccio, for whom he dreams of a degree, a social position and a rich marriage. When Pietruccio, in his first year of university falls in love with Elena, the only daughter of Don Gaetano Botticella, a very rich pasta maker from Gragnano, Raffaele Conti does everything he can to get the two young people married in a very short time, even making his father-in-law believe that the two lovers have made “something” happen that needs immediate repair. Thus will begin a series of misunderstandings that with a pressing rhythm will involve the audience without boring them, as is Viviani's style. Not only gags, but what will be central from the first act will be the father-son bond. The undisputed protagonist is the paternal strength that rows against the adversities of a difficult and miserable life and the desperate anchoring to the safe rock on which to place the son and protect him from every negative event.
The cast is the historic one, but this year it is enriched by a small group of young but talented actors. We will see, together with Merone, on the stage of the Metropolitan the usual sidekick Carmine Beneduce then Mimmo Borriello, Onofrio Ogliastro, Annamaria Varetti, Alfredo Bruni, Attlio Miani, Aniello Sdino, Antonietta Galante, Rita Cioffi, Anna Servillo, Antonella Raia, Giacomo Cipolla, Michele D'Avino, Lorenza De Simone, Margherita D'Alessandro and the participation of the very young Francesco Russo.
The technical cast is composed of Megaride audio and lighting service, Rosaria Riccio costume designer, Ciro Merone photographer, Mario Castì Farina set designer, Clelia Mosca administrator.
“I am thrilled about the performance of L'imbroglione onesto” explains Merone and continues: “first of all because it will soon be 70 years since the death of the great Raffaele Viviani and for me it is an honor to pay homage to him with one of his most beautiful works, secondly because this is one of the most beloved scripts by the great Nino Tarano. The artistic activity of my Company works all year round to remember the great figure of Taranto, not only in the performance of his works, but also in the historical and theatrical research of his art.” He concludes: “I look forward to seeing all of you at the theater, to have fun and get excited together as we have always done”.
