LThe situation in Naples has not changed. This is what the top management of Whirlpool reportedly said at the meeting underway at the Ministry of Economic Development, underlining that the site remains unsustainable and that the decision to no longer proceed with the sale of the Campania plant represented “a strong signal”. “We cannot remain in Naples”, CEO Luigi La Morgia reportedly said – according to union sources – explaining that the alternative of reconversion is still valid and that they will guarantee production until March. The company – the sources explain – is willing to understand together with institutions and unions what alternative solutions are possible and to identify a path that protects employment levels. La Morgia – according to what has been learned – explained that the company continues not to find sustainable solutions in the long term and alternatives to reconversion and that Prs (Passive Refrigeration Solutions), the Swiss company interested in taking over, is still available. Answering a question from Barbara Tibaldi of Fiom, La Morgia – sources still report – is said to have said that no production of washing machines for Europe is planned in China and that the Naples one is not a delocalization. Answering the unions' questions, according to which the October plan cannot be partially cancelled and a discussion at the ministry is necessary within the framework of that agreement, La Morgia is said to have replied that the company has never said it would cancel the plan, but only that it is having difficulties. To date – the CEO is said to have reiterated – the only solution that would guarantee employment is a reconversion.
