A teacher at a municipal kindergarten in the province of Perugia has been arrested and placed under house arrest for mistreatment of two girls (aged one and a half) who attended the facility. A precautionary custody order was issued against her by the Spoleto investigating judge following an investigation by the Carabinieri, according to reports in Il Messaggero, La Nazione, and the website Umbria24. The investigation was launched after several employees of a cooperative that operates at the kindergarten reported the matter to the mayor, who in turn contacted the Carabinieri. According to local media reports, the girls were allegedly yanked, abused, and forced to eat against their will. They were "punished in the bathroom and left there alone" if they did not obey. During the investigation, cameras were also installed inside the school that recorded the abuse. At least five incidents were reported, all of which occurred last October. In one case, the indictment states, during mealtime, the teacher forced a little girl to eat fruit. "Open your mouth, shut up, stop it, or I'll send you to the bathroom with the door closed and put you on the chair," she told her. According to the prosecution, she slapped her and forced her to actually go to the bathroom. Meanwhile, she grabbed the other girl's head and violently forced her to swallow her food.
