"The protection of nature and social justice are an inseparable pair, the two sides of the same coin called life." These are the words used by the founder of Libera, Don Luigi Ciotti, who this morning took part in a student march in Torre Annunziata (Naples) as part of the "Together... we can!" demonstration, aimed at cleaning the Risorgimento beach on the Oplonti waterfront as part of initiatives linked to raising awareness about the Sarno River. Thousands of students, representing 75 schools in the district crossed by the river, crossed the streets that divide the Pitagora-Croce high school, where the march started, and the beach. "The presence of Don Luigi Ciotti," said the headmaster of Pitagora-Croce, Benito Capossela, "is the sign that finally something is moving and above all young people are moving. Even the fact that the boys themselves asked to distribute to the authorities present and to the presidents of the associations a copy of the report of the parliamentary commission of inquiry into illegal activities connected to the waste cycle and related environmental crimes is a sign of attention to the topic”. A touching moment was when Don Ciotti stopped for a moment of prayer in the place where two years ago a building collapsed in via Rampe Nunziate, killing eight people. “The fight for the Sarno – continued the founder of the Libera association – is the fight for life. Today, 85 percent of living beings on Earth are vegetables, plants, while humans and animals represent just 3 percent. We are witnessing the sixth mass extinction, but the first caused by man. We must turn everything upside down, because environmental protection is protection for life”.
