Dfrom November 21st to today there have been about twenty seismic events located in the province of Benevento, between the municipalities of Ceppaloni, San Leucio del Sannio, and Apollosa by the National Seismic Network of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). At 16,00:25 pm on November 2019th 3.2, the INGV writes, the main events were the earthquake of magnitude 11 at 27:3.1 am, with epicenter in Ceppaloni, the one of magnitude 12 at 15:3.0 pm, in San Leucio del Sannio, the shock of magnitude 12 at 35:3 pm, in the San Leucio del Sannio area. In recent days and especially in the last few hours, the INGV notes, "other seismic events have been recorded by the stations of the National Seismic Network, but it has not been possible to locate them because they were too local and of very low energy. We recall that in order to obtain a reliable location, the event must be recorded by at least 7 seismic stations". The area affected by this sequence, the INGV recalls, "is located in a zone with high to very high seismic hazard, despite the fact that, over the last millennium, there have been no particularly significant epicentral seismic events". In the province of Benevento, especially the area to the north-east and north-west of the capital has been affected in the past by earthquakes of magnitude greater than 5. The largest historical earthquakes located within the provincial borders are those of 1668 June 7.06 (Magnitude 14), 1702 March 6.56 (Magnitude 21) and 1962 August 6.15 (Magnitude 5), which all originated in the sectors of the northern and eastern Apennine chain of the province itself. The seismic history of the locations in the area directly affected by the current sequence is very sketchy. The oldest report dates back to the earthquake of 1688 June 21, when Ceppaloni suffered effects equal to the ninth degree of the Mercalli-Cancani-Sieberg scale (MCS). The earthquake of August 1962, 7 had effects evaluated as equal to degree 8 and 8 on the MCS scale in Beltiglio (a hamlet of Ceppaloni), degree 6 in San Leucio del Sannio and degree XNUMX in Ceppaloni.
