A few hours before New Year's Eve, the mayors of the Vesuvius area are renewing their calls for people to refrain from setting off fireworks and to celebrate the holiday in peace. In Ercolano, Mayor Ciro Buonajuto wrote on Facebook: "I know there are some losers among us who will need to shoot to feel good tomorrow, but it's really not worth it," referring to those who criticized the ban on fireworks on social media. I thank everyone who is helping to ensure that tomorrow is a fun evening, free of explosions and unnecessary dangers. Thanks to the police, who today seized tons of illegal fireworks and who, in recent weeks, have been at schools to explain to children the enormous risks posed by fireworks. And thanks to those at home, friends, or relatives who are trying to explain that shooting on New Year's Eve is wrong. At midnight, let's hug those close to us, hold our children tight, and let them know we love them. And if we have a dog or cat at home, let's give them a big cuddle too. For a happy New Year's Eve, that's enough. In San Giorgio a Cremano, students created a commercial encouraging adults to celebrate the arrival of the new year without setting off fireworks, as well as a poster featuring them in the foreground alongside the animals who suffer more than anyone else from the annoyances resulting from this terrible custom. "In recent days, we have again posted awareness posters around the city to reiterate the risk of the reckless and uncontrolled use of fireworks, as well as unsafe fireworks," says Mayor Giorgio Zinno. "These dangers affect not only people and animals, but also public and private property: monuments, buildings, parks, parked vehicles, and containers for organic waste or glass, which are easily ignited. It is everyone's responsibility to raise awareness of the phenomenon and communicate the associated risks. This is a fundamental act for the growth of the entire community." In Portici, Mayor Vincenzo Cuomo is also renewing his call on Facebook to refrain from setting off fireworks after signing a special ordinance banning the sale, throughout the city, of fireworks of all categories, even the declassified ones known as pyrotechnics, under penalty of a fine ranging from €25 to €500.
