On December 31st, the Municipality of Meta will turn 200 years old. To celebrate the bicentenary of its administrative autonomy, the "Città di Sorrento" marching band will parade through the town streets, starting from Piazza V. Veneto and stopping briefly in Piazza SM del Lauro and Piazza Casale, before arriving at the Town Hall. The flag-raising ceremony will be performed there, accompanied by the Italian national anthem.
Following, at 11:00, the extraordinary City Council dedicated to the anniversary will be held in the Council Chamber, in the presence of the current Administration and all the Mayors and Councilors who have led the Meta territory to date. "For the occasion, we will name the Council Chamber after the first Mayor of Meta, Geremia Porzio, and we will leave engraved for future memory the names of all the first citizens who have led the Municipality of Meta in these two hundred years of activity - announce the Mayor Giuseppe Tito, the Councilor delegated to culture Biancamaria Balzano and the Artistic Director for the Bicentenary Andrea Fienga - Given the prestige of the event, we invite all citizens to participate with us in this important event, which will also be an opportunity to toast the beginning of a new year with a look to the past and projected into a prosperous future for our entire community".
Numerous celebratory activities are planned for the Bicentenary throughout 2020. Currently underway is the themed exhibition set up in the Council Chamber, curated by Dina Pepe together with the Artistic Director of the Bicentenary Andrea Fienga and presented at the conference opening the celebrations with the title “The birth of the Municipality of Meta – A desire for autonomy fueled by economic development”. The exhibition collects documents, letters, deeds, images and stories of prominent figures who contributed to the achievement of Meta's independence.
