The last days of the year are affected by great concern for the damage that New Year's Eve firecrackers will cause, causing injuries and victims among humans and animals. Also this year, OIPA (International Organization for Animal Protection) has begun to distribute the decalogue with the indications to best deal with the problem, giving useful and practical advice to protect your 4-legged friends, such as not leaving them in the garden and keeping the volume of the television high to muffle the noises coming from outside (decalogue and in-depth article available on the site https://www.oipa.org/italia/botti-di-capodanno/).
But not only that: the appeal to citizens is to be active in person against the use of firecrackers.
How? Asking your municipality of residence to issue an ordinance that prohibits the use of fireworks and firecrackers in the territory of jurisdiction is the first step to solicit a position from the institutions. It is then necessary to promptly report violations of these provisions to the police and request an intervention to discourage such practices and make the ordinance in question effective. But not only that: among the good preventive practices, education and awareness of citizens cannot be missing.
“Municipalities should organize meetings with citizens to explain the various levels of danger of fireworks and the impact of noise on animals, inviting the use of the quietest and safest ones – highlights Massimo Comparotto, president of OIPA Italia Onlus – Institutions and law enforcement are becoming more active every year against this practice that transforms the first day of the year into a war bulletin, but much more can still be done starting from people's awareness of the consequences that the explosion of fireworks has on the lives of others, animals and humans”.
