The former mayors of Gricignano d'Aversa and Orta di Atella, Andrea Lettieri and Angelo Brancaccio, have been acquitted in the investigation into GMC, the multi-service company that handled waste management contracts in Gricignano d'Aversa and other municipalities, including Orta di Atella, where the Casalesi clan allegedly focused its interests.
For the panel presided over by Judge Roberta Carotenuto, of the Santa Maria Capua Vetere court, the mafia aggravation was not demonstrated during the trial with the crime of bid-rigging which was therefore declared time-barred. Furthermore, Lettieri was fully acquitted of the charge of external competition in mafia association. The arguments of the defense attorneys for the two defendants (lawyers Giuseppe Stellato and Raffaele Costanzo for Lettieri, Mario Griffo and Maurizio Abbate for Brancaccio) were accepted, who had requested the acquittal for both former mayors. “Freed from a nightmare”. These are the words that Andrea Lettieri, former mayor of Gricignano d'Aversa, entrusted to defense attorney Raffaele Costanzo immediately after the ruling with which the First Section, Panel B of the Santa Maria Capua Vetere court acquitted him of the charge of external competition in mafia association in the trial in which he was accused together with the former mayor of Orta di Atella, Angelo Brancaccio.
