The Naples Court of Appeal (Third Section) has acquitted Sergio Vigilante, the former president of the Portici (Naples) anti-racketeering association. He was sentenced in 2013 to eight years in prison in the first instance for extortion and aiding and abetting the Vollaro clan. The appeal judges adopted the following rulings: "He did not commit the crime" for extortion, and "the crime does not exist" for aiding and abetting. Maurizio Lo Iacono, Vigilante's defense attorney, expressed satisfaction after resigning from the presidency of the anti-racketeering association in 2012: "The unreliability of the collaborators of justice whose statements were made has been recognized," Lo Iacono said after the sentence was read. Indeed, it was two Camorra informants, Ciro and Mario Morcavallo, who pointed the finger at Vigilante. For a long time, Vigilante, who was placed under police protection for denouncing loan sharks, was a symbol of the fight against the mafia: he was a legal advisor for the Municipality of Portici and a speaker at numerous conferences dedicated to fighting organized crime.
