Once again, prison officers at the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison are finding themselves eating in the cafeteria... under an umbrella. The person reporting the incident was Michele Vergale, director of the Si.P.Pe. (Prison Police Union).
"Due to a water infiltration that hit the false ceiling of the canteen - comments Vergale - the administration, instead of replacing the canteen service with meal vouchers, until the completion of the renovation of the false ceiling in question, prefers to have the officers consume their meals under the water dripping from the ceiling. The serious fact - continues the union representative - is that the water infiltration that hit the false ceiling in question, continues to spread inside it, so much so that it is starting to put the entire electrical system that passes through it at serious risk of short circuiting. Before the water infiltration can create serious dangers - concludes Vergale - we have informed the competent Authorities for the necessary measures, but to date, the problem seems to be underestimated".
The officers, according to the union representative, "continue to eat their meal in a flooded room near the space used for heating and garbage collection. In addition, they walk near a wet floor with the high risk of slipping and hurting themselves. We hope that the Superintendent will accept our request, ordering the immediate closure of the officers' canteen, replacing the hot meal with the meal voucher until the maintenance and renovation work is completed".
