A theft occurred inside the Abbey Museum of the Sanctuary of Montevergine, in the province of Avellino. Several gold and stone ornaments were stolen from a display case on the wall, part of the vast collection of votive offerings donated by the faithful over the centuries. The theft was reported by the Abbot of the thousand-year-old sanctuary founded by Saint William of Vercelli, Monsignor Riccardo Guariglia, after several staff members noticed the theft, which had apparently occurred within the last 48 hours. To obtain the valuables, the thieves drilled a hole in the base of the display case. The Carabinieri of the Avellino Company are investigating.
