At first, he thought it wasn't a "good idea" to be on the front lines of the fight against climate change. But now that his daughter Greta has become a global environmental icon, Svante Thunberg has different concerns. What troubles him is the excessive "hatred" that young Greta has faced since she began her personal battle against the world's powerful. A battle that, however, has saved her from depression. Svante Thunberg himself, who accompanied Greta on her final sailing trip to America, confessed this in an interview with the BBC. "I didn't do it to save the planet, but to save my daughter," he confessed, admitting that Greta is now "happy" and that her environmental mission has helped her overcome the depression she's been battling for "three or four years." "It's a parent's worst nightmare," Greta's father added. "My daughter had stopped speaking, she wasn't going to school. She was refusing food." To help her escape this nightmare, her father decided to spend more time with her: "I have two daughters, and they are all that matters to me. I just want them to be happy," he said. Now Greta has "changed" and is "very happy" because of her activism. Some might think "she's not normal now, because she's special, very famous, and all this stuff," "but for me, she's a normal child now, she can do all the things other people can do," Svante Thunberg insisted, saying he was concerned about the feelings of people who "don't want to change" their lifestyles to save the environment. What worries him most are "the fake news," "all the things people try to fabricate," and "the hatred it generates." But—Svante Thunberg concluded—Greta handles all the criticism "incredibly well": "Frankly, I don't know how she does it, but she laughs most of the time, she finds it all funny."
