The last weekend brought rain and strong winds throughout the Campania region, causing extensive damage to property and even people. There are multiple scenes of flooding, landslides, uprooted trees, roofs blown off that have made Naples, and Campania as a whole, the protagonist of the general unpreparedness for the climate change phenomena that are affecting the entire planet. In a video published on social networks, a person called "Captain Canotto", alias Gaetano Dario Di Martino, can be seen navigating the city streets, in Via Orta Longa in Angri, which have become a raging river, on board a dinghy and finding several license plates of sunken cars. It is a scene that has now become familiar in our area.
"Unfortunately, the lack of maintenance, due to the abandonment of the territory by the institutions, means that scenes like the one I filmed are a habit of which we, citizens, are tired and also scared. We loudly ask for the intervention of the institutions to restore the territory and thus avoid catastrophes." - declared Mr. Di Martino, author of the video.
Regional Councilor of the Greens Francesco Emilio Borrelli and radio host Gianni Simioli have collected the citizen's protest: "That of 'Capitan Canotto' is a form of ironic protest aimed at highlighting the instability of the territory in the face of climate changes and the danger derived from it. Climate change is evident and creates serious problems but the truth is that we were completely unprepared, adequate maintenance has not been done and human interventions have modified the structure of the territory making it fragile and helpless to the outbursts of nature and atmospheric agents. Now, however, irony is no longer enough but it is necessary to carry out real extraordinary maintenance interventions and it is equally important to change our habits and customs. There is little to laugh about now in the face of nature's fury."
