The most requested Christmas gifts for Neapolitan teenagers (especially those between the ages of 15 and 17) aren't smartphones and designer clothes, but cosmetic surgery to make them look more like the latest showgirls, singers, presenters, and fashion bloggers. "In an era where beauty is a must-have, the 2019 Christmas gift is characterized by the numerous requests for aesthetic medicine," explains Francesco D'Andrea, president of SICPRE (Italian Society of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery), "with the aim of improving one's physical appearance, but also of reshaping one's body based on current trends, with specific references to the world of social media and entertainment." The users are, in particular, very young girls who ask their parents for Christmas presents such as "surgery to correct their breasts, lips, body contours, and buttocks," D'Andrea continues, "because they look up to celebrities from film, TV, and music, or influencers with millions of followers on social media like Instagram, who have achieved success through their appearance. As professionals, we limit ourselves to providing effective responses where the indications are true. We object to excess, to artifice, because beauty always remains natural," concludes the SICPRE president.
