Sessa Aurunca. Soldiers from the Mobile Unit of the Sessa Aurunca Tenancy, as part of Operation “30 Days Sea – Phase II” launched last October at an international level by Interpol and aimed at combating forms of marine pollution caused by illegal dumping into inland waterways, have seized an area of approximately 20.000 m38.000 where approximately XNUMX tons of “PET COKE” were stored, a highly polluting residue resulting from the transformation of oil, used as industrial fuel.
The control activity carried out has in fact allowed to ascertain the illegal disposal, without any filtering, of the runoff water from the yards and wetting of the piles of Pet-coke stored on the site, managed for years by a private company with registered office in Rome.
In particular, these wastewaters, without undergoing any purification treatment from polluting substances, were conveyed outside the company storage area, directly into a canal of the Aurunco di Bonifica Consortium (called Papero bis) and then flowed into the nearby Garigliano river and, finally, into the sea with serious damage to the marine ecosystem.
During the inspection, the Finance Police who intervened, having verified that the water used for washing the petroleum coal was being illegally disposed of, arranged for the technicians of the competent ARPAC to also carry out checks and sampling of both the water, characterised by an intense dark colour, and the black muddy material found in the canal, in order to establish the actual level of contamination.
