” The competent offices must act with the urgency of the case with rapid and effective interventions, starting with a thorough investigation of all the trees present along the streets and squares of the populous hillside neighborhood, where this morning, on a particularly windy day, a tall tree, in via Belvedere crashed to the ground, placing itself transversely to the roadway and damaging two cars. Fortunately, at that time, no one was passing on that street, otherwise a tragedy could have been repeated that, unfortunately, has already been experienced in Vomero. ” The one to report the serious problems that affect the street trees in Vomero is once again Gennaro Capodanno, president of the Comitato Valori collinari, who, also through his blog, has repeatedly urged the competent offices to intervene, without however finding operational responses to his numerous reports.

"Unfortunately, the trees of Vomero have been plagued by significant problems for some time now," Capodanno points out. "The lack of pruning, carried out in a timely manner and in the appropriate manner, has meant that the trees along the sidewalks of streets and squares have grown out of all proportion both in height and width, even reaching the upper floors of buildings. On windy days, like today, the force exerted by the wind tends to bend the trunk. At that point, the tree, especially if afflicted by untreated pathologies that have undermined its resistance, can either break or even be torn off from the base, falling to the ground with all the weight of the trunk and branches, with imaginable consequences."

"A situation that is not new - adds Capodanno -. In Vomero there are several tree sources where the trees have been cut down, leaving only the stumps. It is well known, in fact, that in addition to being attacked by colored cancer, which has caused their decimation, the plane trees of Vomero have been infested for years by colonies of an insect, a tingid, whose scientific name is Corythucha ciliata, whose female reproduces at the rate of 200 eggs for each cycle lasting 45 days, hiding to reproduce under the bark of the tree. Despite the numerous reports made over the years, no steps have been taken to definitively eradicate the parasite, which could be eliminated with natural methods ".

New Year's Eve on the overall situation of the already meager public green spaces available to the inhabitants of Vomero, which, if we exclude Villa Floridiana - which has also been plagued by tree problems for some time, with areas still closed to visitors -, consists essentially of street trees, once again draws the attention of the competent authorities, so that all the necessary initiatives for their protection and safeguard are activated quickly, while guaranteeing the safety of citizens.
