This Saturday, too, as per a press release issued by the Neapolitan transport company, the funicular service will end with the 10:00 PM departure without any extension. This paradoxical situation penalizes not only the many regular public transport users but also the many tourists who visit the Neapolitan capital during this period. "This uncertainty," says Gennaro Capodanno, president of the Comitato Valori Colliri e del Trasporto Pubblico, "is caused by the fact that the agreement between the union and the company, which called for the creation of a third shift for workers, thus ensuring the operation of the Central Funicular, with an extension of services until 2 a.m., expired on November 30th and was not renewed. Since then, the Saturday evening services for an additional four hours, since there is no longer a mandatory shift, can only be operated on a voluntary basis. This means that a certain number of company workers, including those responsible for ensuring presence on the two trains at the four stations and maintenance, plus a service manager, are available to work overtime."
"Hence the uncertainty, since until the last moment we were confident that the workers, including those working the two Saturday shifts, would be available," Capodanno points out. "The previous two Saturdays went badly. In fact, as the many travelers who had the unpleasant surprise of finding doors and gates closed recall, the Central funicular had its last run at 22:00 PM on both Saturday, December 7th and Saturday, December 14th."
