“In the hilly municipality of the Neapolitan capital, which includes the territories of Vomero and Arenella, with about 120 thousand residents, they have tried to do like the astute domestic worker who, after sweeping, instead of throwing away the accumulated dust, hides it under the carpet – says Gennaro Capodanno, president of the Comitato Valori collinari -. In the same way, they have boasted, even in the recent past, about the fact that illegal street vendors have been completely eliminated from the streets and squares. Instead, you turn the corner and you always find the illegal street vendors there. Like in the very central Piazza degli Artisti, which has been transformed into an offshoot of the nearby open-air market”.

“In a location apparently more secluded, compared to main roads such as via Scarlatti or via Luca Giordano, but not for this reason to be tolerated since these are illegal vendors who occupy, moreover, public land, selling clearly counterfeit goods such as bags and scarves – continues Capodanno -. English: A situation that also fits perfectly with what can be found in the market, located a few steps from Via Mario Fiore, in the area of Via Casale De Bustis, which has become a true symbol of illegal commercial activity tolerated for years, with the absence of those who should have controlled it and have never done so, in order to return the affected streets to their natural destination, that is to say to traffic, even though the Santobono hospital emergency room is nearby and even though the entire affected area becomes inaccessible, even to emergency vehicles, during the entire morning, due to the exorbitant occupation of public land that largely exceeds the old stalls, measuring one meter by two, which some time ago had been hastily drawn on the roadways, when it was thought that the investigating magistrates could finally intervene to also identify the responsibilities for the persistence of this true urban souk in the heart of an area where there are around two thousand fixed-place commercial businesses, including large-scale distribution.

“In the current period – Capodanno underlines -, to these so to speak historical situations, we can add the presence of illegal street vendors in one of the areas identified for the so-called Christmas fairs, near the Mascagna park, in via Pacio Bertini and in via Angelica Kauffman. Here too we can see many illegal stalls, where one of everything is sold, starting with counterfeit bags”.

Capodanno takes this opportunity to renew its appeal for the competent offices to implement effective and non-episodic initiatives to combat this serious phenomenon.
