Throwing firecrackers at moving cars. The latest in uncivilized New Year's Eve fun has caused damage that could have had even worse consequences in Naples. The firecracker, in particular, was thrown at the car, destroying the rear window and shattering it into a thousand pieces. The incident occurred on Via Carbonara (which runs from Via Foria to Porta Capuana). A mother traveling in the car with her young son reported the raid carried out by gangs of teenagers. This time, the damage was limited, but what if similar actions were to repeat themselves? Regional councilor for the Green Party, Francesco Emilio Borrelli, raised the alarm and shared it on social media. "Unfortunately, this isn't the first similar incident we've been told about, due to what seems to have become a highly dangerous trend. A shocking phenomenon that risks having dramatic consequences." The firecracker was thrown while the woman driver was in traffic. The firecracker got stuck in the windshield wiper. Exploding, it shattered the rear window into a thousand pieces. A huge risk for passengers. "If there had been someone in the back seat, or, worse, if the car had an LPG system under the trunk, we would be witnessing a tragedy today," adds Borrelli. "It's absurd that the prank of some uneducated youth nearly caused such a tragedy. Unfortunately, every year," the regional councilor maintains, "we find ourselves having to deal with this absurd Christmas tradition of setting off firecrackers, which, combined with incivility and stupidity, creates a very dangerous phenomenon. We ask law enforcement to make a greater effort in these last few days before New Year's Eve to monitor all retailers and, first and foremost, to stop the sale of illegal fireworks, but above all to prevent them from being set off in the middle of busy streets."
