From December 24th and throughout the Christmas holidays, visitors to Pompeii will be able to visit the archaeological area with some special offers.
The exhibition The Furnishings of the House of Julius Polybius is set up at the Antiquarium of Pompeii. The story of a family, of a public figure, of individuals torn from life. Their habits, their whim and desire to show off their wealth, through luxury in furnishings and everyday objects. Over 70 objects, including lamps, lamp holders, incense burners, pottery for cooking food (boiling pots, frying pans, pots for boiling focaccia and vegetables), banquet cups and glass bottles, food warmers, candelabra, a bronze signet ring with the name of C.IVLI PHILIPPI, perhaps the real owner of the house, the perfect cast of a wicker basket, a terracotta piggy bank, dice and more. But also the attempt to give an appearance to the inhabitants of the house, told through the reconstructed faces of 3 of the victims found. The face of a girl under 20 years old, in the last months of pregnancy at the time of the eruption, that of an adult man between 25 and 35 years old and that of an elderly man, around 60 years of age.
Visitors will then be able to follow a suggestive itinerary in the greenery of ancient Pompeii to visit the excavations in an unusual way and understand the way of life, from different aspects.
Ornamental gardens, both depicted on the walls to expand the visual space of the rooms, and as internal green spaces, where the dwelling allowed it, characterised many of the homes in the ancient city.
Two splendid examples of internal gardens are those of the House of the Ephebe and of Triptolemus, recently restored to their splendor, following the maintenance interventions of the greenery, which involved their rearrangement according to non-impact projects and historical-botanical criteria in the choice of essences.
In addition to the House of Triptolemus and the Ephebe, among the beautiful domus with large internal gardens, the following are worth a visit: the House of the Golden Cupids, also recently reopened after maintenance work, the House of the Anchor with its unique garden underneath, the House of Menander, the Praedia of Julia Felix, the House of Venus in the Shell, and the House of Marcus Lucretius on Via Stabiana.
The initiatives for the Christmas period continue, with free admission to all the Vesuvian archaeological sites on 24, 26 and 31 December, as part of the Mibact initiative #IoVadoAlMuseo, according to the usual visiting hours.
Furthermore, on December 24, children and young people will be able to pick up the comic book Vulcanalia, created by cartoonist Bianca Bagnarelli, free of charge at the Porta Marina Information Office, as part of the project “Comics in Museums” promoted in 2018 by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism and renewed this year for the second edition. The initiative, through the art of comics, is aimed at promoting knowledge of the archaeological and museum heritage, leveraging imagination and fantasy.
Bianca Bagnarelli is inspired by the ancient festival of Vulcanalia celebrated with a rite: small fish and other animals were thrown into a large bonfire, to symbolize the life of those who made the sacrifice, asking to be spared once again. Like every year, the Pompeians had performed the rite, unaware of the fate that awaited them.
Finally, we remind you that until 31 December 2019 it will be possible to purchase and/or give as a gift the Pompeii 365 subscription, through the platform www.ticketone.it (without any commission costs during the launch period), at the discounted price of €50 for Pompeii and €70 for all sites, valid from 1 January 2020.
