High-profile names were among those arrested in this morning's 'Rinascita-Scott' operation, which resulted in the arrest of notorious 'Ndrangheta bosses as well as political and law enforcement officials. Among those arrested was lawyer Giancarlo Pittelli, a former FI parliamentarian, who "systematically made available to criminals his significant knowledge and privileged relationships with prominent figures in the political and institutional world, business, and professions, including to acquire information covered by official secrecy and to ensure its development in the business sector." This is what Carabinieri investigators reported regarding the lawyer, who was arrested on charges of mafia association as part of the operation. The investigation also revealed direct ties between Pittelli, a member of the Grande Oriente d'Italia, and Luigi Mancuso, one of the bosses of the Mancuso clan. Among those arrested is Pietro Giamborino (under house arrest), a former regional councilor for the Democratic Party, believed to be "formally affiliated with the Piscopio local." According to the prosecution, the politician forged connections with some of the most prominent members of the Vibo Valentia 'Ndrangheta to secure votes and support necessary for his political rise, effectively becoming "a stable link between the association and Calabrian politics, instrumental in the illicit awarding of public contracts and jobs to members or individuals connected to the gang." According to the prosecution, Gianluca Callipo, the mayor of Pizzo and president of the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI) Calabria, was elected as a member of the Democratic Party but later left the party. He recently became close to Mario Occhiuto, the mayor of Cosenza (FI), whom he supported in his candidacy in the upcoming regional elections. Thanks to his political and administrative role, he allegedly engaged in unlawful administrative practices favorable to the gangs, granting some of the suspects benefits in the management of business ventures. Those arrested also include Filippo Nesci, commander of the Vibo Valentia Municipal Police, held responsible for corruption involving members of the association, and Enrico Caria, commander of the Pizzo Local Police at the time. Caria, in collusion with Callipo, allegedly acted in the interests of the Mazzotta family, who were dominant in the area, largely through omissions. Also under house arrest is Luigi Incarnato, secretary of the Calabrian Socialist Party (PSI). The investigating judge has banned former Democratic Party parliamentarian and regional councilor Nicola Adamo, under investigation for influence peddling, from residing in Calabria. Also arrested is Giorgio Naselli, former commander of the Catanzaro Carabinieri operations unit, now provincial commander in Teramo.
