There are 37 people reported to the Judicial Authority by the Finance Police of the Provincial Command of Rome for having continued to receive monthly, after the death of those entitled to them, the ordinary pension, the social allowance, the attendance allowance or the "war" pension, depending on the case, with a damage of 3 million for the coffers of the INPS and the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
The Special Unit for Public Expenditure and Community Fraud Repression of the Guardia di Finanza, after having acquired the names of pension holders from INPS and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, had started their "blanket" monitoring, cross-referencing this information with that contained in the available databases, in order to verify the possible death of the entitled person and possible cases of receipt of the emolument by third parties.
Following the investigations carried out "on the field", the Guardia di Finanza, with the collaboration of the local branches of the social security institute and the State Territorial Accounting Office of Rome, discovered the 37 cases of undue receipt of social security and welfare benefits, reporting those responsible, in various capacities, for the crimes of undue receipt of public funds following false declarations and aggravated fraud against the State.
In numerous cases, the Judicial Authority has ordered the seizure of the sums in the current accounts, up to the amount of the credit claimed, while the INPS and the State Territorial Accounting Office have immediately suspended the provision of the benefits.
Among others, the positions of a woman who died in 1991 stand out, whose granddaughter, until 2017, had illegally appropriated over 300.000 euros, as well as of a professional who had not communicated the death of his parent in 1993, continuing until 2016 to collect from the Ministry of Economy and Finance his father's "war" pension for over 267.000 euros.
The operation is part of a broader plan to prevent and combat illicit activities that damage the public budget, taking resources away from the most needy segments of the population.
