Already from the first weekends of December it was clear that the number of travellers who chose the train to travel during the upcoming holidays had increased significantly. For this reason, in the last weekend before Christmas the Naples Railway Police further intensified the observation and control measures to guarantee safety, both real and perceived, to the myriad of tourists, visitors and commuters who crowd the Neapolitan station every day, ensuring a widespread presence of police officers both in the stations and on board the train. In the last few days 6729 people have been identified at the access gates of the station as well as those recently built near the tracks, constantly guarded by the Polfer police officers assisted by the military of the Operation “Safe Roads” and by the personnel of the Corporate Protection of FS Italiane who are responsible for checking travel tickets. Over five thousand bags were checked both with the help of the Canine Units of the Naples Police Headquarters and with the use of metal detectors supplied to the 380 patrols employed at the station in this pre-Christmas period; 137 were, instead, the patrols that operated on board the trains considered at risk. The officers also issued 35 fines, of which 12 to the Railway Police regulations and proceeded to report to the Administrative Authority 9 people caught in the areas pertaining to the railway station while, without the required authorizations, they were trying to sell merchandise consisting of lighters, pendants, umbrellas and socks, which was subsequently seized. A 45-year-old Neapolitan, instead, was stopped in the streets adjacent to the central station while carrying out the illegal activity of parking attendant. The man was fined 771 euros under the Highway Code and issued an order to leave Naples Central Station. In recent days, the Campania Railway Police Department has issued a total of 10 orders to leave the same number of individuals who have committed administrative offences, preventing the free and safe use of public spaces.
