Pozzuoli, toxic material abandoned on an ancient Roman site

Toxic waste has been dumped in Pozzuoli on an ancient Roman site, a segment of the ancient Puteolis-Capuam Consular Road, which connected the Phlegraean Fields to the Appian Way. The complaint was filed by a group of residents of Via Celle, in upper Pozzuoli, and the Nemea cultural association, who identified large pieces of bituminous sheathing abandoned on one side of the ancient Roman road, parallel to the provincial road Via Campana, which connects Pozzuoli to the Phlegraean Fields hinterland and the Giugliano area. In the immediate vicinity of the Roman road, which still retains its basalt block paving, lies another Roman site, the Necropolis of Via Celle, a vast area that connects to the Flavian Amphitheater. The dumping of hazardous waste—including bituminous membrane—is increasingly common in the Phlegraean Fields area due to high disposal costs, although the Municipality of Pozzuoli has long since established a toll-free number and a collection site for such materials. In the Via Celle area, there is no video surveillance system, either public or private, and therefore it is impossible to trace the perpetrators of the toxic waste dump.
