Senator Liliana Segre was awarded honorary citizenship of Scafati, a city that won a gold medal for the Resistance.
This morning, during the last City Council meeting of 2019, the proposal presented – already at the end of November – by Councilors N. Acanfora, M. Ambrunzo, A. Carotenuto, M. Russo and M. Grimaldi was discussed, and was voted unanimously by acclamation.
The proposal to grant honorary citizenship to Senator Segre arose following threats she received for her speech in the Senate regarding the need to establish a Commission against Racism and Anti-Semitism. The signatory Councilors intended with this proposal to ensure a "home" in every institutional setting throughout Italy, distancing themselves from those who foment hatred.
The proposal, presented by Michele Grimaldi, was approved by the assembly, as summed up in the words of Mayor Cristoforo Salvati, who grasped, beyond political differences and ideology, the moral value and profound political significance of the proposal advanced by a section of the opposition.
This morning, therefore, through its highest institutional representatives, the Scafatese community remained faithful to its democratic, anti-racist and anti-fascist identity, finding a unitary and shared synthesis.
“To Senator Liliana Segre, born on September 10, 1930 in Milan, a tireless activist, Holocaust survivor, active witness to the Italian Shoah, an example of commitment and loyalty to the values of humanity and the Republic for young and future generations.”
