Education Minister Lorenzo Fioramonti has submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. In recent weeks, the minister has repeatedly complained about the lack of funding for schools and universities in the budget. According to several majority sources, Fioramonti could leave the Five Star Movement to form an independent, yet "pro-government" parliamentary group, as the embryo of a new political entity. "At this time, all eyes are also on a group of MPs who could leave the Five Star Movement with the former minister to create an independent group still supporting Conte. According to reliable sources, they are expected to form their own pro-Conte parliamentary group and, ultimately, a new political entity. Along with Fioramonti, MPs such as De Toma, Cataldi, Aprile, Angiola, Rospi, Rossini, and Rachele Silvestri are said to be leaving." According to Corriere della Sera, Fioramonti argued in the letter that VAT needed to be revised, even maintaining the increase, to secure the €3 billion he requested for his ministry. A few days ago, in Trieste, at the research ministers' meeting, the minister complained: "The education system in this country needs €24 billion. The €3 billion I have identified is not enough" but "the waterline." And on Christmas Eve, League leader Matteo Salvini threw down his gauntlet: "Let's hope at least one person keeps his word. He said that if there wasn't €3 billion in investment, he would resign. Minister Fioramonti, resign and get out of the way." The name of Nicola Morra, president of the Anti-Mafia Commission, who had already been mentioned as a possible minister during the formation of the Conte-bis government, is once again being circulated as his replacement.
