In the heart of the renovated Piazza Garibaldi, the City of Naples has decided to place a plaque dedicating the gardens to the victims of the Rapido 904 train disaster. The unveiling ceremony was held today on the 35th anniversary of the massacre, which occurred on December 23, 1984. The 'Lest We Forget' gardens are located near the recently inaugurated playground. "From today," said Mayor Luigi de Magistris, "those who pass by here will be able to question what happened 35 years ago. The State has achieved important results regarding that tragedy, but I believe that full clarity has not yet been shed. Although the mafia and terrorist ties have been established, I believe there was more to it. Today's plaque is a reminder to all citizens to always seek the truth, because a democracy without courage is not a true democracy." Rosaria Manzo, president of the Association of Relatives of the Victims of the Massacre, expressed satisfaction with the administration's decision to dedicate a place to the memory of the victims. "This is a wonderful gesture on the part of the Municipality," she emphasized, "because in this way, the memory of our loved ones will no longer be just a private matter but will belong to the entire city community." Students from Naples and several from Aosta attended the ceremony. Alessandra Clemente, the councilor responsible for Toponymy, was also present and emphasized the role the de Magistris administration is giving to collective place names "as a tool for remembering what happened and ensuring that similar tragedies never happen again."
