The Conference on the theme "Ecotoxicology and effects on human health" was held in the Palazzina Borbonica of the Real Borgo di San Leucio. The Conference, attended by about two hundred biologists from all over the peninsula and abroad, was organized by the National Order of Biologists with national headquarters in Rome and vicarious headquarters in Naples in Via Toledo in the "Palazzina Motta" well known to Neapolitans.
The National Order of Biologists is led by Senator Enzo D'Anna, a native of Caserta, who took it firmly under his control a couple of years ago and is guiding it towards interesting future goals – indeed, close ones, he says – stringing together a series of professional conquests for the future and visibility of the profession of Italian Biologists.
The topic of Ecotoxicology and its effects on human health is felt by ordinary people and not only by specialists. Senator D'Anna himself, as Casertano.doc, feels it particularly close to his heart. In the background of the issues discussed in the Conference there is Law No. 103 / 2013 of the Campania Region. Our applause goes to all the competent and passionate participants for having developed and illustrated their theses with ability, enthusiasm and doctrine. Among the many very valid interventions we cite a few. Enthusiasm, ability and doctrine for example were not lacking in the veterinary speaker Dr. Gerino, who focused on Law 103/2013. He began with a two-footed entrance into the audience of those present, defining the said regional law simply as "Horrendous". Reason? It is delimited by the geographical and administrative borders of the Municipalities that have become part of it. Almost as if the environment – said the speaker Gerino – could be administratively delimited. Then his focus shifted to the contaminated sites and the need for their mapping provided that it is done with a shared operational methodology. For example, knowing that in the mapping of contaminated areas, the hexavalent chromium of Solofra can be found in Rovigliano or Castellammare, transported there by the Sarno river fed by the Solofrana torrent. However, this is pending the creation of a Campania Biobank to be done by developing the screening already performed on 70 thousand subjects by virtue of the Regional Council Resolution No. 180/2019.
Another interesting intervention was that of the biologist Federica Spani, which concerned the Hydra method for the detection of teratogenic factors in fresh water, both lotic and lentic. The protagonist of the method of rapid and easy implementation is a freshwater coelenterate, in practice a small polyp. With low cultivation costs, a colony of these polyps can be generated. They are then purposely amputated, as it is possible to arrive at an early and safe analysis of the water by calculating the regeneration speed of the amputated parts by the polyp. In short, an early warning system on the quality of the water is created. The reading of the test provides the scale of danger of the water, as in Lazio, where periodic tests are carried out to evaluate the evolution of the pollution of water resources.
Before closing, let's remember another intervention, that of Dr. Bottino who illustrated the effects of metals from medical devices introduced into the patient's body. This is the case with the replacement of teeth and limbs, as well as the introduction of metal contraceptive devices with toxic metal elements. In fact, metal alloys induce metallosis through the release of cations and metal ions with the induction of reactions, including electrical ones, which are causes of ailments that are difficult to identify.
Senator d'Anna, moderators De Vita, Celentano and Dumontet, as well as all the staff of the National Order of Biologists, received warm applause at the end of their speeches, interrupted only by the weather alert issued by the Prefecture of Caserta.
