A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck eastern Japan, including the Tokyo metropolitan area, in the early hours of today, January 14, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported. The quake struck at 4:53 a.m. in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, with the epicenter located approximately 50 kilometers deep. The quake was felt with varying degrees of intensity in the prefectures of Ibaraki, Gunma, Tochigi, and Saitama, and in the cities of Tokyo, Yokohama, and Chiba. Japanese authorities have not reported any significant damage or injury.
