The 18 Pastellessa battles paraded through the city streets this past weekend. Thousands flocked to Macerata, Campania, in the province of Caserta, to witness the event, which despite the passing of the years continues to grow in popularity, attracting staggering numbers in terms of participation and involvement from neighboring and non-neighboring communities. So much so that the festival of Sant'Antonio Abate is being nominated for inclusion in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. From children to the elderly, everyone was in the streets. And everyone looked up to see the fireworks and the 1200 bottari (traditional snails) who played traditional music with firecrackers, vats, and sickles. Harmony reigns in the town. The festive atmosphere unites everyone. People sing with the bottari, stroll through the town, and sample the traditional dishes prepared by the parish of San Martino Vescovo. Today, as part of the events promoted during the holiday week, a "study day" will be held in the council chamber, culminating in the presentation of the "Historia Loci" Award. Folklore, tradition, and religiosity will be explored through the presentation of numerous projects and works. There will also be workshops with activities for both adults and children.
