Two women have died in an accidental fire at a nursing home in the Caserta area. Anna Penna, 56, and Emma Romagnolo, 79, died in the blaze at the "Il Pino" nursing home in Carinola. The nursing home housed 20 residents; many managed to escape when the flames broke out, while others were rescued by firefighters, including with a ladder truck. Initial investigations suggest a short circuit may have caused the blaze. In addition to the two women, who died of asphyxiation, another woman with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries suffered from pulmonary edema and was transferred to the hospital in Sessa Aurunca. Five other people were treated by emergency medical services, but fortunately none of them required hospitalization. Three firefighter teams and the Carabinieri are on site and are working to determine the cause of the fire. The fire completely destroyed the third floor and the roof of the building. The two people who died of smoke inhalation, aged 78 and 56, were originally from Benevento and Francolise, respectively. The building, which currently housed approximately 20 people, housed not only elderly people but also people with mental health issues. None of the injured who received first aid from 118 personnel are in danger of dying. The cause of the fire is not yet known. The Carabinieri and Fire Brigade are inspecting the electrical system and a heater.
