A hundred or so merchants gathered this morning on the square to protest against the choice of mayor Gianluca Festa who complain about economic damage. The merchants protest and ask for the direct intervention of the prefect. In the meantime, this morning, work continues at Campo Genova where the city market will be relocated.
Market suspended: tensions at dawn in Piazzale degli Irpini. The street vendors wanted to open their stands this morning but the municipal police of Avellino were on site and enforced the suspension order. The Carabinieri and the Police were there to help, blocking the entrances when the traders arrived. About a hundred of them, who this morning asked for an urgent meeting with the Prefect of Avellino. “There was no urgency for this suspension” they say. The sit-in – coinciding with the reopening of schools – caused huge traffic slowdowns along the main roads of the capital. The buses, this morning, after leaving the garages, passed directly along the stops without stopping in Piazzale degli Irpini, which this morning became the protest square.
